Whale Gusher Urchin Fixed-Handle On-Deck Bilge Pump

The Whale Gusher Urchin is a manual on-deck bilge pump with a fixed handle. A manual bilge pump is what works when the batteries are flat, the electric pump has burned out or the water has already reached the wiring. Those are exactly the circumstances where a bilge pump matters most.

Whale has refined this design since the 1940s, and the Gusher is the pump most often specified as a boat's backup. On-deck mounting puts the pump where it can be worked from the cockpit rather than reaching into a locker, which matters when a boat is moving. A fixed handle means there is no removable lever to be stowed elsewhere and lost, which is the usual failing of a manual pump in an emergency.

The pump should be paired with hose and fittings that match the listed inlet and outlet sizes so flow is not restricted by the plumbing. This model is best compared by mounting style, hose compatibility, manual pumping capacity, and how easily the handle can be worked in the installed position. Browse more bilge and water pumps.
