Half an inch is the small size, for the wire bundles behind a console or a dash rather than a main harness. That is where most of a boat's wiring actually is: half a dozen circuits running together to switches and instruments, too small for the 1.5-inch sleeving and still worth protecting.

Expanding to four times its normal diameter means a few sizes cover a wide range of bundle diameters. It also lets the sleeving pass over connectors already fitted, which is the practical advantage over split loom on an existing harness.
