Zinc is the traditional choice for saltwater use, but it isn't suited to fresh water, where it can develop a coating that stops it from working. If your boat moves between fresh and salt water, the aluminum kit is the better choice. Don't mix the two metals on the same engine.

Replace anodes when they're about half consumed, and never paint them, because paint stops them from working. Clean the mounting surface to bare metal before installing so the anode makes good electrical contact.
