The SmartPlug Data Port Case and Inlet is 316 stainless steel, matching SmartPlug's stainless shore power inlets.

This is a data connection rather than a power one, giving a weather-resistant exterior position for a network, telephone or television feed alongside the shore power inlet. Running data through an unsealed opening is how water gets into a hull, and this gives a proper fitting for the job rather than a grommet and sealant.

Matching the 316 stainless of the shore power inlets means the exterior connection points look like a set rather than an accumulation of unrelated fittings. On a transom or hull side where the inlets are visible, that consistency is most of the reason to choose stainless over a molded case.
