A float-equipped sending unit in the tank feeds this gauge its reading; as fuel level changes, the float moves and shifts the sender's resistance, which in turn changes how much current reaches the meter and moves the needle to reflect an accurate, real-time fuel level.

A properly working fuel gauge is more than a convenience; running a tank dry unexpectedly on the water is a bad spot to be in, whether that means drifting in a channel or losing steerage near a lee shore.
