An AIS transceiver needs its own GPS position rather than borrowing one from a chartplotter, because the position it transmits has to be independent and continuously available. That is why a dedicated antenna ships with the system rather than sharing an existing one.

Ten meters of cable covers a run from a transceiver below to an antenna sited with a clear sky view, which usually means above the coachroof or on an arch.
