OWB Holsters for Outside-the-Waistband Carry
Outside-the-waistband (OWB) holsters mount on the exterior of a belt or compatible attachment, making them a familiar choice for range use and other belt-carry applications. Their practical differences include how closely they ride to the body, how they attach, and how securely they retain a particular firearm. Belt-Slot Holsters and Paddle Designs
Traditional belt-slot holsters thread onto a compatible belt and can hold the pistol close to the body. Paddle holsters attach differently and may be quicker to put on or remove, depending on the design. Compare attachment dimensions and the holster maker's intended use rather than assuming every OWB design carries the same way.
Confirm Gun Fit and Retention
The exact handgun model, slide length, frame profile, and installed accessories all influence compatibility. Consider whether a holster uses molded friction retention or a separate active retention mechanism. A correctly matched holster should be evaluated according to its manufacturer's fit instructions before regular use.
Leather and Molded OWB Holsters
Leather belt holsters offer a traditional appearance and can be molded around a specific pistol shape. Kydex and molded polymer models are alternatives where a rigid shell and consistent form are priorities. The 1791 Gunleather Black Right-Hand 1911 Belt Holster is an open-top, molded leather example made for compatible 1911 pistols, with belt slots rather than a paddle mount.
Handedness, Belt Width, and Ride Position
Choose right-hand or left-hand configuration deliberately, and check the stated belt-width range. Ride height and cant affect comfort when seated and how the holster sits under a cover garment. A supportive belt is often more important to daily comfort than another external adjustment feature.
Consider Convertible Carry Designs
Some holsters support both OWB and IWB configurations with the proper hardware. If you need a more concealed arrangement, compare our IWB holster options as well. Shop OWB holsters at CritPro by handgun compatibility, material, mounting style, and intended carry arrangement.
