The New Haven pattern is one of several regional oyster knife shapes, and it is the short, broad one, built to be driven into the hinge and twisted rather than slid along a shell. The blunt tip is deliberate. An oyster knife is pushed hard against resistance and a point would snap or go through a hand, so there is none.
