Lopolight is a Danish manufacturer of LED navigation lights, headquartered in Humlebæk, Denmark. The company grew out of the experience of founder Jan Moller on a solo round-the-world sailing trip, which convinced him that navigation lights needed to use far less battery power. He teamed up with engineer Peter Hancke and built the first Lopolight from scratch around LED technology instead of treating it as a simple replacement for an incandescent bulb. Lopolight is especially well known for its compact, fully potted navigation lights, which have the LEDs sealed in epoxy and mounted in a machined, anodized aluminum housing. That construction makes each light waterproof and resistant to vibration, so it holds up on fast powerboats, ocean racing sailboats, and working commercial vessels alike. The lights are rated for roughly 50,000 hours of use and draw about 80% less power than a traditional incandescent fixture, and the low profile of about 25 mm lets them blend into the lines of a boat. The lineup covers sidelights, stern lights, tricolor lights, masthead lights, combination units, and 360° and 180° anchor and all-round lights, with more than 700 combinations of size and color to fit different vessel lengths.
Lopolight navigation lights are built to IMO and COLREG 72 standards, carry the Wheelmark, and are type-approved by authorities including the USCG, the UK MCA, and Germany's BSH. The lights were tested by QinetiQ, a USCG-approved laboratory, to comply with UL 1104, which means they are properly marked for mounting on new-build boats. The brand launched its next-generation series in 2019 with improved LED efficiency, brightness, and optical precision, and more than 150,000 Lopolight lights have shipped from the Danish factory to vessels around the world.
