Tactical and EDC Flashlight Guide

Lumens, beam types, batteries, runtime, and everything else that actually matters when choosing a flashlight for everyday carry, camping, or tactical use.

Understanding Lumens

Lumens measure total light output, but raw lumen numbers are one of the most misunderstood specs in flashlight marketing. A 1,000-lumen flashlight with a wide flood beam may illuminate your campsite beautifully while a 1,000-lumen light with a tight throw beam could light up a target 300 yards away. Context matters enormously.

1 to 20
Night-adapted reading, keychain lights, do not wake your tent partner
20 to 100
General indoor use, walk to the bathroom, routine navigation
100 to 500
Most EDC tasks, campsite lighting, trail use, car emergency
500 to 1500
Tactical and search use, area illumination, temporary blinding
1500+
Search and rescue, professional tactical, momentary burst output

For most people, a quality 300 to 800 lumen EDC flashlight handles 95% of everyday situations. Chasing maximum lumens adds cost and battery drain without practical benefit in most scenarios.

Beam Types: Flood vs. Throw

Flood Beam

Wide, even illumination. Great for close-range work, camping, reading maps, and area lighting. Short throw distance.

Throw Beam

Narrow, focused spot. Reaches far distances with intensity. Less useful for nearby work. Common in tactical lights.

Combo Beam

Spill plus hot spot. Most versatile for everyday carry. Bright center for distance with usable flood for close work.

Colored Modes

Red preserves night vision. Green aids blood tracking for hunters. Blue reveals certain biological materials.

Battery Types

Battery Rechargeable Runtime Best For
AA / AAA Optional NiMH Moderate Emergency preparedness. Replaceable anywhere. Recommended
CR123A Optional RCR123 Good burst performance Tactical lights and high-output burst modes
18650 Li-Ion Yes Excellent Premium rechargeable EDC. Best output and runtime ratio. Popular
USB-C Direct Yes, integrated Varies Everyday carry where a charger is always nearby
21700 Li-Ion Yes Outstanding High-output and extended-use applications
Preparedness Note AA-battery lights are the top choice for emergency kits. AA batteries are universally available, have a 10-year shelf life in lithium form, and can be sourced at any gas station worldwide. For pure EDC performance, 18650 rechargeable is king.

By Use Case

Everyday Carry

Prioritize compact size under 5 inches, clip or magnet, 200 to 800 lumens, rechargeable via USB-C, and single-button operation. You want a light you will not leave at home because it is too bulky.

Camping and Outdoors

Prioritize runtime over max output, wide flood or combo beam, water resistance at IPX4 minimum, and AA or 18650 batteries. A headlamp is essential for hands-free tasks. Bring a handheld for distance and signaling.

Tactical and Defense

Prioritize 500 or more lumens for temporary blinding, a momentary-on tail switch, weapon-compatible mounting rails, and a 1000 or more lumen strobe mode. Nitecore and similar brands at CritPro deliver genuine tactical performance.

Emergency Preparedness

Prioritize AA batteries, multiple output modes, simple interface, and durable construction. Keep one in every car and emergency kit.

Waterproofing and IP Ratings

Rating Protection Level Practical Meaning
IPX4 Splash resistant Light rain, sweaty hands, accidental splashes. Minimum for outdoor use.
IPX6 Jet water resistant Heavy rain, rinsing under tap. Good all-weather standard.
IPX7 Submersible 1m/30min Dropped in puddles, stream crossings. Excellent for field use.
IPX8 Submersible 2m+ Diving, fishing, flood conditions. The highest common rating.
