Packing Philosophy

The Rule of Three Weights

For any item, ask whether it is worth its weight. Camping gear falls into three categories: non-negotiables where safety and survival items make weight irrelevant, upgrades that are comfort and convenience items earning their weight on longer trips, and luxuries that are everything else you may want to cut on demanding trips.

Car Camping

Weight is essentially unlimited. Prioritize comfort. A good lantern, a quality camp kitchen setup, and a comfortable folding knife for food prep matter more than ultralight savings.

Backcountry

Every ounce counts. Consolidate functions. A quality fixed blade replaces a hatchet for most tasks. A headlamp replaces a lantern. A multitool replaces a separate knife and tool kit.

The Two-Failure Rule For any critical system including fire, shelter, water, navigation, and light, carry two methods. A lighter and waterproof matches. A headlamp and a handheld flashlight. A map and a compass. One item can always fail. Two is unlikely.
